Sierra Leone’s Hip Hop music star Kao Denero won best African Hip Hop artist 2021 at the African Entertainment Awards USA. At the event held in New Jersey, Denero was announced winner of the award voted by fans from around the world. He defeated other African legends in the category like Sarkodie of Ghana, Khaligraph Jones of Kenya, Nasty C of South Africa, Vector and Ice Prince of Nigeria.
Real name Amara Denis Turay, Kao Denero has been singing hip hop songs in Sierra Leone and the US for over 20 years. He has had collaborations with several artists including Sarkodie of Ghana, Busy Signal of Jamaica and Run Town of Nigeria. Denero was recently appointed by Sierra Leone’s president Maada Bio as the Ambassador of Music and Entertainment, responsible for promoting the country’s entertainment industry abroad.
Few hours after receiving the award, Kao Denero posted his message of appreciation and gratitude to his fans and the organizers. “Thanks to the God of Abraham. Thank you Salone. Thank you Africa. Thanks to all the fans who voted at home and abroad. It was long overdue but still timely,” he posted.
Some other Sierra Leonean entertainers have also taken to social media to congratulate Ambassador Kao Denero for becoming the first Sierra Leonean to win this award, a win they say is for the small country.
Denero said the mission has always been to change the narrative of non-believers thinking it can never be. “Well now it has happened. Big things come from small countries. Never ever give up,” he ended.
Since the year 2020, Kao Denero has released several hit Hip Hop songs that have generated discussions across the continent. He recently piloted a continental cypher that featured Hip Hop stars from several countries including Liberia, Cameroun, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone.
